Friday night I went waltzing with [livejournal.com profile] emmett_the_sane and the delightfully cuddly [livejournal.com profile] cortneyofeden, plus her husband [livejournal.com profile] ef2p and a bunch of their friends. I was surprised by how big an event it was - there must have been a hundred people easily in that huge YWCA gymnasium, and it was welcoming to people of all skill levels and orientations. A lot of people came in wonderful costume, so it was a feast for the eyes as well.

I found to my surprise that I enjoyed the "fast waltz" even better than the slow waltz. The energy of it is a complete endorphin rush - whirling about the room as you circle around your dance partner. It goes too fast to concentrate on steps - so the "head" part is cast aside, and it is pure intuitive motion. I loved it. I was introduced to it by a very nice man who I didn't know, who came over to where a group of us were sitting and asked if anybody wanted to dance. "I do!" I said, jumping up, and he proved to be a very experienced dance partner, moving me about the floor with skill. We introduced ourselves somewhere in there; he is [livejournal.com profile] chrisfs on LJ.

I was especially delighted that I had the stamina to keep up through the dances that I chose - I don't always, due to that spine malformation thing. But it wasn't acting up today, and while I didn't dance every dance, I didn't have to drop out early from the ones that I started. I think I'll start going there lots...
