First contact
Sep. 4th, 2005 02:35 pmBranwen, Preia and Solveig have each known that there were Other Cats in the household for some days now, but I'd wanted Branwen and Preia to get a sense of their territory in my room before making formal introductions. Today the moment seemed right - Solveig was snoozing down the hall from my door - and so I let my two out to explore a bit.
The first meeting went really, really well. Branwen approached first, in stages - head down, a step forward, then a backing away, 'til they were nearly a foot apart, at which point she retreated back into my room for a breather. Solveig simply stayed still, watching intently.
Preia did her trademark "Cat? There's no cat here," and let Solveig approach her. When they were about a foot apart, they looked at one another for a long while, and then there were a few small "ok, here's my line" warning hisses, but no attacks. (Contrast this with Solveig's all-out attack bouts with the outdoor Mama Calico - they've been having major hiss-and-lunge fests, fortunately with the glass patio door between them.)
When I coughed twice, that unsettled them a bit, and there were a few more small hisses, and Preia retreated into my room; Solveig made to follow, and then stopped. Since both my cats were now back in my room and Solveig was outside it, we figured this was a good time to give them all a break. We closed the door, and there were treats all around.
I'm very, very pleased with that as a first meeting. The mild hisses are to be expected, but they didn't freak. Yay cats!
