Finally getting around to using it for its intended purpose...

So I'm sitting at a coffee shop near my office, with my laptop and a cup of hot cocoa. I think this is the first time that I've actually brought my laptop with me to a wifi-enabled cafe.

You'd think that I'd have gotten around to doing this kind of thing sooner, given that I've had the laptop since early 2005, and given that my office doesn't have a net connection.

But I've only recently got in the habit of bringing the laptop afield with me, following a recent series of trips to places that actually had wireless connections. Toting it along isn't so much of a shlep as I'd imagined.

What possessed me to even own a laptop if I wasn't planning on leaving the house with it, you might ask? Well, as I was telling tenacious_snail earlier, I originally bought the laptop as a present for my cats.

Yup, my cats. See, my lap is a small one, and at least one of my cats is fairly large, and so a chair-n-desktop setup was not an environment conducive to simultaneously playing on the net and scritching my furry little vixens' heads.

Hence the laptop, so that they could curl up next to me on a sofa or bed while I was logged in... and so that my partner/s could too, for that matter ;-)

And hence the fact that the idea of actually using the laptop as a portable communications device is only now occurring to me, a year and a half into owning the thing.

(That, and the fact that my Sidekick phone is dead, and my Treo hasn't yet come into my possession. Soon, methinks...)
