Hi from Oakland...
Jan. 9th, 2007 12:25 pm...Oakland, Oregon, that is ;-) Am 162 miles along my route, at a nice grassy rest area with plaques that teach about the history of the local Cow Creek branch of the Umpqua tribe. They resisted US government efforts to displace them from their land in the 1800's.
Pretty day for driving, with low drifts of fog highlighting the hillsides. I saw an odd sight north of Eugene... there seemed to be a small black cloud swooping back and forth above the highway in the distance, almost as if a gauzy dark cloak were caught in a wind draft. When I got closer, I could see that the cloud was made up of thousands of discrete dots flying in unison. Whether they were very small birds or rather large bugs, I couldn't tell, as the cloud headed west before I got to that segment of road. Any ideas?
