So, recently I brought my car in to the Toyota dealership for its 120K tune-up. They told me that I needed to do about $1000 worth of repairs to the brakes and struts imminently, as the pads were 2mm on the former and the latter was leaking.
I checked with
brian1789 to see what he thought about this, and he said that the price quoted was way higher than need be. So, I called a well-reputed local auto shop (
Kevin's Auto Repair in Mountain View, which is said to be honest) and asked them for an estimate on the same work. They cited lower prices and expressed some dubiousness that all of the stated work needed to be done. "Bring it on in and we'll take a look," they said.
Turns out that the struts were in sound working condition and that a leak would have no bearing on their structural integrity... and the brake pads were 4-5mm and still good for another 10-15K miles, not 2mm. They left all that alone, did some other minor stuff that did need doing, and saved me the $1,000 that I would have paid to the Toyota dealership for no good reason.
I am angry that the Toyota dealership flat-out lied to me in saying that work needed to be done that did not. I am wondering if there is any way to address this - I know I can't claim to have lost money since I didn't end up having the work done, but is there any way to hold them accountable for lying to me and trying to bilk me? Letter to the Better Business Bureau, perhaps, or to Toyota's main company? Bad review on Yelp? What do you all think?
