Mom's distressing discovery

Mom wrote me the following today:

Dear Geri: I was looking for something in the trunk that's in the attic. (This is the trunk that you had used for camp.) When we moved ten years ago, I packed the trunk with treasured items such as my wedding dress, your prom dress etc., etc. I haven't looked in that trunk for many, many years and when I opened it...it was empty. Nothing at all in there. To say the least, I was shocked! I really don't know what to make of it? I feel so sad about this loss. Love, Mom

I feel so badly for her - Mom is really sentimental and those things were very precious to her. I can't imagine who'd have been so low as to steal them.

Odd. I don't know anything about your family, really. Any ideas?

Damn, that really is a low thing to do :(

That is horrible! I know exactly how it feels to lose treasured family items. Hugs of empathy for your mom.

Argh. What a nasty shock for you and your mom. I'm sorry to hear about that.

How could anyone even
have gotten to these items?

That's really bizarre! I can't imagine that those items would be of value to anyone but their owners. Given the surety in your text, I assume that it's unlikely your mother moved the items and then forgot, but I do hope that's what happened. What a shame!

Maybe someone hung them up in dress bags elsewhere in the attic?

Is there someone in the (extended) family who might have borrowed the trunk at some point, and might remember where the contents were moved to?

It seems like they may be found somewhere else in the attic, no? Is it possible she moved them and didn't remember? Stealing them seems so wrong and un likely. Who has access to the attic?
