Pic from Jay's talk in San Antonio

[livejournal.com profile] brian1789 gave a talk on Mars drilling yesterday to a few hundred students at the SPE conference in San Antonio, and I wanted to share some pictures from his talk.

Here he is on the lecture hall floor, addressing the students from within their midst. This gave his lecture a more personal touch than if he'd simply spoken to them from up on stage.

Here he is later on at the exhibit hall, where he answered questions from groups of intrigued students for about 2 hours nonstop:

For fun, Jay entered the hall in a spacesuit and helmet, which the crowd loved. Here he is getting assistance in removing the helmet from one of the groups of students up near the stage.

Lots and lots of people were taking his picture as he began his talk...

I like his use of animated hand gestures :-)

Surrounded by throngs of students...

Students weren't the only ones interested in his work... a lot of oil company execs wanted to know more about his automated drill, too!

These students were all shy about approaching him to ask a question, and were hanging back around the periphery. I told them that he loves to talk to people, and encouraged them to go on up :-)

More interested conference-goers...

Kneeling down to answer this one kid's question:

Deftly handling a question from a man who was slightly challenging...

Yet more throngs of students...

Here he is with Victoria, who arranged his talk (and our accomodations, which were lovely - we had a 15th story balcony view overlooking the Riverwalk).

Speaking of that Riverwalk...

It had lush tropical plants, like these banana trees:

We walked along it a bunch of times, doing lots of geocaching. Here we are with 2 travel bugs:

One more pic of him that I like, from the plane ride in:

It was wonderful to see him so much in his element, and to share the time together.

It was wonderful to see him so much in his element, and to share the time together.

Isn't that wonderful? It was one of my favorite parts about Spain, frankly. I adored watching and listening to him really be in his strength and power. Awesomely amazing to watch.

I love that picture of him right above, BTW (in the plane). I think it's a particularly handsome shot of him.

that's seriously awesome.

I'm glad that you had such a wonderful trip together.

My posture is *terrible* in a couple of those photos! (winces)

*snuggle* I know that I am my own worst critic when I look at photos of myself, so I can't quite fault you for "seeing only the flaws" when you look at yours. But truly, love, when I look at these photos, your posture isn't what stands out - what I see is the power and presence of a brilliant man who is speaking with passion on a topic that he loves... and his love and dedication towards teaching good things to young open minds.

Oh, you look just great. Your excitement and enthusiasm really stand out that, I didn't even notice the posture. (I just went back and looked again, and didn't see any terrible posture.) People are often harder on themselves than others are on them. (I should know.)

... and Congratulations!

What great pics! Thanks for sharing them!
