I tend to measure the clarity vs. fogginess of the day by how well I can see the Farallon Islands (25-30 miles off of the Pacifica coast) from my window. Today, they are perfectly clear; I can see not only the South Farallon group, but the North Farallon Group as well - those are a far tinier set of crags seven miles north of the main island body, and they aren't often visible from the California shore. Cool! If I squint, I think I can see the Middle Farallon as well, which I didn't know existed until I looked at the website below and then went back to the window. But that's real tough to see.

Here is a fascinating History of the Farallon Islands...

I remember seeing the Farallons from the top of Mt Diablo east of the east bay and then turning to see Mt Shasta and turning again to see Mt Whitney and wondering how much land there was in that triangle and how much food, folks, and water it produced... I saw the Islands again from the Enterprise as we left for the war and again when we returned home... Thanks for posting about them...

Peace

My goodness! that's an immense amount of land mass (1/3 of California?), and I marvel at the visibility of that day, if you were able to see all three from Mt. Diablo. Wow.
