So in 20 Questions, the player thinks of an object, and the computer gets 20 questions to guess what it is. I was playing, and the word that I was thinking of was "menorah."

The computer did a decent job of asking questions that got closer and closer to what it was, and finally it concluded:

"I am guessing that it is a UPS(uninterruptable power supply)?"

Boy, that comes closer than the computer can possibly know :-)

Nothing could be more beautiful than this. I now know why this game was put on earth.

That's deep.

I wrote a sort-of similar program (it only guessed animals) a long time ago, and [livejournal.com profile] merde and I were frequently amused by the tangential nearness of some of its "wrong" guesses.

But yours is better.

Um, mb... just how widely was your animal 20 questions game distrubuted?

'cuz I was telling Geri earlier about an animal-only 20 questions game I used to play in the very early 80s. I recall it on the Apple II, and some unknown computer at the Lawrence Hall of Science at Golden Gate Park. I loved that game!

While I tend to give away my homerolled software to anyone who wants it, I don't think my animals program got out much. It was inspired by the Apple II version. I also wrote a variant that tried to guess which girl you were thinking of (the first question involved kissing).

Wow. (though technically, it should be the ner tamid -- but this is good enough.)

I also think it's awesome that you have so many people on your friends list who understand why this is appropriate.

She had to explain it to me, though! Fortunately, I'm a person who loves this type of humour even more when it's specific enough to require an explanation.
