Home from Ottawa
Oct. 12th, 2002 07:55 amArrived home last night from Ottawa, and was happy to see Emmett again after a week. It was really nice being with Ellie and Marna and other Ottawa friends who I don't see often enough (but Ellie visits here next week, yay!). Lots of cuddling and grrltalk and shopping and ethnic foods and strong-woman music CDs on the ride down. And autumn foliage too, in the Adirondacks.
The customs agents were cordial, and found Ellie and I charming, and they never did get around to asking for the birth certificate that I spent 1/2 hour frantically searching for before the trip. But I did see them pull other cars over for searches and ID, so it was necessary to have it.
Foods of the trip included wonderfully tangy Moroccan stew at the Marketplace, and creamy, nutty Lebanese delicacies at this pastry shop called Sea Sweets, on Bank Street. Bought tons of bath luxuries at this place called Lush - I got Emmett 3 kinds of soap: one a strong lemon, one a fun pineapple, and the third an intense dark aqua. Also these things called bath bombs: you dump them into a hot tub and watch them fizz around to produce lovely colors and scents. Upon returninh from shopping on Tuesday night, we took turns taking baths a deux with lots of sparkling tub fizzies and a plate of excellent cheeses, chocolates, apples and crackers by the tub side. Luxury!
I found navy seed beads and larger matching navy and gold accent beads for my Mom's 60th birthday necklace, and am glad not to have to drive 3-4 hours to Jackson or Chico for that; for some reason, of all the myriad of colors that seed beads come in, navy is an infrequent one, and my mom *would* be wanting a navy necklace next.
We went thrift store shopping with Lorayne, who has a talent for finding other people clothes that look good on them, and indeed, of the three shirts I took home, two of them she found for me. It was fun shopping in a group of 4, because we could pull any gorgeous item off the shelf and it would probably fit someone among the four of us. Had we taken Sian with us, I think we'd have found a match for every pretty item we saw - she's tall and slender, and we didn't have anyone in that category among us.
We also went to a haute stationary store and a really thorough candy store, and got more pretties there. I got Emmett lots of weird candy, which he enjoyed. Actually, he hasn't seen all of it yet, there was so much that I decided to save the non-perishable stuff for another gift :-)
Yay Canada, yay friends and loved ones.
