IKEAaaggghh!
Aug. 18th, 2002 08:43 pmToday I had my first and hopefully last trip to IKEA. It has some good deals, but I think I'd be willing to pay money not to have to go there. The layout is really taxing on the sensory system.
We came to buy a large cabinet / armoire for the bedroom, and I had this preconceived notion that each type of furniture would have its own distinct section of the store. Instead, there were lots of little furnished rooms, each sporting a different lamp, a different cabinet, a different bedspread. Points awarded for creativity, yes - but this meant that everyone shopping at the store - a small city's worth of folks - had to elbow-jostle through each of the little rooms in order to get the full sampling of the one particular type of item that they were looking for.
And it was crowded, and bright, and maze-like, and we both became quickly overwhelmed by the time we found the items that would actually be of use to us. Emmett was up for a bit more shopping, and so I found a nice pallet to sit on off in a corner and played Snake and Memory on my cel phone while he got the rest of the stuff.
And then we had to stand in line for a half hour to pay the cashier.
On the way back we had to deal with a low-air tire and lots of Bridge traffic... so this evening we are both a bit on-edge.
Next time I need furniture, I'll go visit yard sales. Or even Target.
We did have a successful day's worth of shopping, though. $90 bought us the materials to put together shelving for the bedroom, shelving for the terrace, and spice racks. And in Berkeley I got an inexpensive used copier for my office - a nice compact one that fits well in the small closet there. We dropped it off on our way home.
